Reason 250

#250: All the galas and receptions. My favorite are the CLAS galas and receptions and the Hispanic Heritage Month events.

This was from the original list. I still love that there are many galas and receptions, though I don’t necessarily love each individual gala or reception.

Some of them flat out suck because either:

a- There is no open bar, so you are expected to socialize with boring people without a social lubricant

b- The only people that are going are the same people that went to the reception/gala that you went to yesterday

c- There are entirely too many humble brag speeches

d- All of the above

And even for the good ones you have to figure out whether:

a- You want to wear an outfit that is both office appropriate and gala appropriate

b- You want to wear a regular boring office outfit to both things

c- You want to wear a regular boring outfit to the office and then change before the event

I never go with “c”. I almost always go with “a”, which means that I now own a pretty expansive collection of sheath dresses, which I have determined are one of the few outfits that can fulfill both conditions specified in “a”.

For the times when it’s actually fun to go and the times when it’s fun to know you have them as a plan B, it’s fun to live in a city full of galas and receptions.

Example of a gala/reception. Notice the shift dress. If you are a guy, you can wear a guayabera. No problem.
