Always give 110%

I hate this expression. Hate it. Apparently it is meant to motivate people, but the only people who would be motivated by this should be encouraged to do math instead. You CANNOT give 110%.

Your options are:

– Give 100%, which is all you have right now, and hope for the best.

– Get better so that the 100% of tomorrow is better than the 100% of yesterday.

– Give 110% for which you would have to borrow 10% from someone else. Since you’ll have to repay that 10% at some point, the next time you give you’ll only be able to give about 90%. That 90% and the 110% from the first time average out to 100%, so we are back at the beginning.

Whatever you are doing, give it all you’ve got, but not more. Hopefully all you’ve got will be better than a horrible cliche.

Next week in this section: “I love you infinity plus one”. Just kidding.

This t-shirt designer gave 100%. Avoided a horrible cliche and then added a clever twist.

This t-shirt designer gave like 5%. Horrible cliche and no clever twist (unless worn ironically by a hipster).
